When my boys were just babies, I had little time to focus on my photography so I took up the hobby of digital scrapbooking.  It was so new that there were not even any stores selling elements and papers which are now a common place item in hundreds of digiscrap shops.  During that early time in my digiscrapping days, I was teaching myself Photoshop 5.  Yes, this is before the Creative Suite came along, and even before PS Elements came along.  Can I just tell you that I was so frustrated that I nearly gave up the new hobby before I really even started?!  Well here I am 7 years and seven Photoshop versions later…

Now that the kids are older and in school all day, I have found more time to pick back up with my photography business and even started designing products specifically for photographers a few years ago.  But back when I was learning Photoshop, I discovered the Photoshop tool called “actions” to be super helpful in creating quick work of repetitive tasks like re-sizing my snapshots of the kids so that I could quickly print out a bunch of 4×6′s to share with the grandparents.  As my Photoshop skills increased, my actions also became more involved and widely varied – including black & white conversion actions, color pop actions, comic book art action, chocolate conversion action, and so many more.

So in 2007, I started selling these Photoshop and PS Elements actions to other digital scrapbookers.  But since I’ve been refocusing most of my efforts on my  photography business much of  these last 2 years, it seemed only natural to offer the Photohop actions to photographers too!  So I thought that perhaps you’d like to see some before and afters of some images…take a look:

This is a stock image which was fine just the way it was.  Perhaps a bit underexposed, but not horrible by any means.  With a combination of a few different actions, this has taken on a completely new look.  This final image was achieved using Sharpening Action from the Pro Photo Set 4 plus the Eye Defined Action from Pro Photo Single 18 plus YesterYear Action from Pro Photo Single 53 and also the Teeth Whiten Action from Pro Photo Set 5.  All of these actions have layer masks so that you can apply the desired effect right where you need it.

ActionCombo 1 Vendor Feature: Kim Hill of Resources 4 Photographers

This next stock image also uses a combination of several different actions.  Notice how much more bold the colors are and how much crisper it looks.  This was achieved by using Color Correction Action from Pro Photo Set 2 plus the Downtown Action from Pro Photo Single 55 plus the Flower Child Action from Pro Photo Single 66 and also the Lab Sharpening Action from Pro Photo Set 3.  Just like the prior example, all of these utilize layer masks so that each action can be adjusted to your liking.

ActionCombo 2 Vendor Feature: Kim Hill of Resources 4 Photographers

These actions work well on everyday snapshots too.  You don’t have to be a professional photographer to enjoy using them and for your images to be taken to a new creative level.  Take a look at some of the images that Angie (from the ACOT design team) provided.  Her first one is this fun wedding party photo.  As you can see, the men are in the shade while the ladies were more in the sun.  The skin tones are not equal because of this (see how much cooler the men’s skin tone is?).  So I used a combination of actions to bring this photo to life.  First, I started out by fixing the exposure using the Underexposure Fix Action from PSE Action Set 1 and only applied the effect to the men’s side of the image as they were too dark.  Then I added the Color Burst Action from PSE Action Set 2 and utilized the layer masks to warm up the skin tones and give a boost to the color of the wood.  But it still needed a little more zing so I used the Flower Child Action from Pro Photo Single 66 and the Dodge & Burn Action from Pro Photo Set 15.  And to finish off, it needed to be sharpened up a bit so I used the Sharpen Image Action from Pro Photo Set 1.  The result is remarkable. icon smile Vendor Feature: Kim Hill of Resources 4 Photographers

ActionCombo 3 Vendor Feature: Kim Hill of Resources 4 Photographers

Angie had another really cute shot that she sent over for me to play with.  In this shot, I thought the girl’s eyes needed to be enhanced – brown eyes can be quite challenging to photograph and often need a little help in Photoshop to bring out their real beauty.  I also wanted to enhance the color with this.  So I started out by giving it a pop of color with the ColorSat Action from PSE Set 18 and used the layer mask to apply it only to the hat and greenery behind her.  To and a little more punch, I used the PSE Luminous Boost Action from PSE Single 21 – again, using the layer mask to only apply the color to the hat.  To bring out those beautiful brown eyes, first I used the Brighten Eyes Action from PSE Action Set 8 and then gave them an extra bit of sparkle with the Eye Sparkle Action from PSE Single 26.  This combination took this image from dull to dazzling in just a few minutes.

ActionCombo 4 Vendor Feature: Kim Hill of Resources 4 Photographers

So the next time you are sitting at your computer trying to decide what to do with your images, I hope you will consider using some of these helpful actions to enhance what you’ve captured.  You’ve already created the foundation and these actions are just that extra little boost to bring your images to life.

Spotlight on Amanda Breeden

Amanda Spotlight on Amanda Breeden We love spotlighting our members here on 4 the Love of Focus. We have a talent group of photograhers. This week, let’s get to know Amanda Breeden from Palmetto Posh Photography. She’s a great photographer from the Greenwood South Carolina area.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m a work at home mom to a 9 year old daughter and the wife of a wonderful man who encourages me in all I do.  I love to play golf and I’m addicted to all things pink.

Where do you call home?  Ninety Six, SC…and yes, Ninety Six is the name of the townicon smile Spotlight on Amanda Breeden   It’s about an hour away from both Columbia and Greenville, SC.

How long have you been doing photography? Studio or on location? Describe your photography style.  I’m in my third year of business and though I have an in-home studio, I prefer to do outside sessions when possible.  Most of my outdoor sessions take place in my neighborhood.

My style is contemporary portrait photography with some lifestyle mixed in.  I like to process clean and crisp and I really like to see bold colors and a good bit of contrast.

How did you learn photography? I’m mostly self taught. I took a few classes in high school and college but have learned a lot from practicing, reading books, interacting on forums and trial and error.

Who is your biggest influence/inspiration?  I don’t have any one person that has influenced me but there is a quote that inspired me when I started my business; “It’s never to late to be who you might have been”- George Eliot.  I love this and think of it often.

JackLM 0186 Spotlight on Amanda Breeden

Do you specialize in a certain area of photography? What kind of photographs make your heart sing?  I don’t specialize.  I do a lot of newborns, kids and families.  But I also do some commercial work, seniors and occasionally pets.  Kids are definitely my favorite subject to photograph!

What’s in your camera bag? If you had to choose just one lens, what would it be? What is the next photography purchase you want to make?  In my bag is “Stella”, a Nikon D700.  My back-up body is a D90.  My lenses include a Nikon 24-70 mm 2.8, a Nikon 50 mm 1.8 and a Sigma 70-300 with macro.  I use my 24-70 lens 90% of the time.  I love this lens!

What’s your favorite photography accessory/extra?  My Phat Strap camera strap.  I had it custom made and I LOVE it.  I always get tons of compliments on iticon smile Spotlight on Amanda Breeden

What are you getting from the forum that you didn’t expect? I love the intimate feel of 4TLOF.  It’s great to be able to bounce ideas off of others and find out what has worked or not worked for them. And any time I need a product review I know just where to go!

Spotlight – Nancy Lary Studios

This week we spotlight a fabulous Northern Indiana photographer, Nancy Lary.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 4 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a lifestyle portrait photographer located in Northern Indiana.  My husband & I have three kids, ages 7, 5 and 2.  I worked as an Occupational Therapist for eight years before transitioning to stay-at-home-mom/work-at-home-mom/photographer/web designer/PTO mom extraordinaire.  That’s right, I live the type of life that’s full of yoga pants, diet coke and rollin’ in a minivan.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 10 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

Where do you call home?

We live near South Bend, Indiana.  While this is our home and where we will raise our family, home-home will always be Missouri.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 9 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

How long have you been doing photography? Studio or on location? All on-location.  I have a blank wall in my office that I’d like to eventually do simple portraits but that would require clients to brave the chaos that is my home…so for now…all on-location.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 8 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

How did you learn photography?

Online!  I took a few online community college courses but mostly learned from forums & tutorials.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 7 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

Who is your biggest influence/inspiration?

I pay closest attention to photographers that capture real, emotional images and then take the time to write eloquently about them.  Tara Whitney, Stacey Woods, Angie Warren, Stacey Turner, Cheryl Jacobs.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 6 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

Do you specialize in a certain area of photography? What kind of photographs make your heart sing?

My focus is on lifestyle family portraiture.  My goal is to capture connections.  I want families to look back on the images we create together and really feel the essence of their family at that point in their lives.  I prefer to do sessions in the clients home but also enjoy finding other location that are meaningful to the family.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 5 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

What’s in your camera bag? If you had to choose just one lens, what would it be? What is the next photography purchase you want to make?

I shoot with a Canon 5D MarkII.  I have one lens, a 50mm 1.4.  And a lensbaby.  And an old Canon A-1 film camera.  I’m not sure what my next photography purchase will be.  The upgrade to this camera was a necessary splurge.  I eventually want to have a 28-70L.  I love prime lenses but have recently felt the need for a versatile zoom.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 3 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

What’s your favorite photography accessory/extra?

I almost didn’t answer this one.  But I’m actually kind of proud that I haven’t gone overboard on accessories.  I have an original Jo Tote in red.  I don’t have a cute strap or really any fun accessories.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 2 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

What does 4TLOF do for you & your business?

There are so many fabulous businesswomen on 4TLOF that I know if I have a question, I will get solid advice as well as learn from advice & experience of others.

4tlofspotlight nancylary 1 Spotlight Nancy Lary Studios

Other thoughts:

sweet or salty : yes

morning or night person: night.  the night time is the right time.  (name that quote!)

I could give up every food except for… : Toss up between french fries and chocolate.  Unless diet soda counts.

How to make gmail your personal and business email command center.

Gmail is the best email client out there. It just works and it works so well for getting your website emails.
So I’m writing this tutorial with that assumption…or biased opinion or whatever.tongue0005 How to make gmail your personal and business email command center.

1) If you don’t already have one, create a gmail account using whatever name you want. It doesn’t have to have your business name in it. Make a note of the password (duh).

2) Go to your hosting cpanel. I’m using bluehost as an example. You’ll start here by creating each email address:

You can follow their tutorial for creating the accounts:
https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/newemail?step=newemail
3) Now you need to forward each address to your gmail. Go back to your cpanel main page, down to Email & choose “Forwarders”. Click “Add Forwarder”. Fill in the “address to forward” name & choose the domain from the dropdown (if you have more than one domain). Fill in the “forward to email address” field.
4) Go to your gmail inbox. At the tippy-top right hand corner, there’s a tiny gear. Hover on that and choose “Email settings”. Choose “Accounts and Import”.
5) The 4th section down is “Check mail using POP3″. Click “Add POP3 Email Account”. Enter the FULL email address as the User. Enter the email address.
6) Continue through the prompts for sending mail as this user & wait for the verification email.
7) The 3rd section down on that “Accounts and Import” page pertains to sending email. You can choose which account you want to be the default so when you compose any message, it’s “from” that address. You can also choose this message-by-message when you’re writing emails.
icon cool How to make gmail your personal and business email command center.Sometimes website emails don’t instantly appear in your inbox. If you ever want to check quickly, come back to this page and click “check email now” for that address.
9)  You can use the labels feature to label each incoming message to be color-coded with the account it was sent to.  I do like color coding.

Voila!
One more biased recommendation: I use the gmail mobile on my phone instead of my iPhone email. I just617 How to make gmail your personal and business email command center.the setup & conversations.  I actually have a whole group on my iPhone and iPad for google apps:  docs, calendar, gmail and lists.  It’s been the only way my husband and I can share a calendar!

I’m still hardly ever on time for things and still miss appointments and meetings.

And to balance out the dullness of this post, here’s a little cuteness (although her expression is kind of “just read an email tutorial”) for ya!

great post! i wish it had been around when i actually did this! maybe for a follow up post you could explain more about how to label different incoming E-mails forwarded from other accounts, and also using filters and extra inboxes. They totally help me keep my life in control!

Jessica - October 9, 2011 - 6:14 pm

Wonderful! I use GMAIL, and I dont feel like its as organized as other programs, but I try to do what I can! :)

Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

Posted by:  Nancy Lary

I enjoyed learning more about Dalia Sherman of Story Of Life Photography.  She specializes in newborn and child photography in Northern New Jersey, Rockland County and New York City.  She also knits hats and other photography props!

Tell us a little something about yourself!
This is so hard, I hate talking about myself! LOL. I live in New Jersey with my husband and 3 children. My
mother is Russian and my father is Canadian and my brother and I were born in Israel. We have lived
in the USA since I was 8. We are the only ones from my family living in the states. I have a doctorate
degree in clinical psychology which was my chosen profession until I had kids. Having kids really does
change everything.icon smile Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

IMG 9907 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

How long have you been a photographer?
Well, that depends on what you mean by photographer. I got my first camera when I was 8. I was
always the designated picture taker. I documented all our family vacations, class trips and other
general “moments” My father is a photographer and I guess that sparked my interest. He has been a
great teacher and influence and a fantastic source of support!

Describe your area of expertise.
I am really passionate about photographing newborns, they are definitely my favorite subjects. I also love to
photograph kids, they are a much different challenge but one that I really love. I enjoy getting them to
just be themselves with me. I think my clients choose me because they love the emotional connections
that I capture for them. That has been the consistent feedback I get from them.

IMG 9807 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

How did you come to specialize in this area?
I have always had an affinity toward newborns. Since I am not having any more, I get my “fix” with my
clients. I love having their new babies for an hour or 2 and giving their exhausted moms a little break
while I get to snuggle them.

What’s your best tip for editing newborns?
Keep it as natural as possible, especially when it comes to smoothing, in my opinion babies should not look like plastic dolls, work in layers so the opacity can be adjusted to keep it real.

IMG 9888 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

Please share with us your absolute favorite photograph you’ve ever taken and tell us the story behind it,
why it speaks to you, etc.
This recent photo of my kids is one of my favorites. You can see the tween attitude in my oldest, the
innocence of my youngest and the cuteness of my middle son.

IMG 9709 1 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

How would you describe your style?
My style is a combination of posed and lifestyle. I enjoy taking the traditional newborn poses that
parents love and I love taking the more lifestyle, unposed pictures that parents are not expecting but
love because of the emotion captured and the naturalness of the scene.

What gear is in your bag?
My trusty old original canon 5D, that baby is going to be hard to upgrade. I love it! I use my 50mm and
my 24-70mm and use them on almost every session. Outdoors I am trying to use my 85mm lens more
often. I love my 100mm macro for nature shots and my 70-200mm for my kids sports games

IMG 9691 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

Are you considering any new gear purchases this year?
I am waiting for Canon to come out with a new body that has all the features I want.

IMG 3109 copy Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

Do you prefer to work in the studio, on-location, or both and why?
On location only. I prefer the look and style of on-location.

Let’s see an image from your favorite location!

IMG 9486 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

What sets you and your work apart from other photographers in your area?
I think I offer something different than other photographers in my area. The fact that I travel to the client
sets me apart. And I offer a natural clean style that also differentiates me from others in my area.

IMG 9826 1 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

What is your image processing style and the software you use?
PSCS4, may upgrade to 5 one of these days, but will probably wait for 6

Please tell us about your long-term goals.
Long terms goals are to continue to build my client base and continue to learn more about my craft.

IMG 8568 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

Best advice for new photographers breaking into the business?
don’t jump in too fast, practice and learn and go slowly.

IMG 3297 Member Spotlight: Dalia Sherman

If you were not a photographer, then…
Maybe I would return to my previous professional of clinical psychology but if I had to do it all over again
I would choose school psychology as my area of expertise. If I knew then what I know now….
